About Mission Valley
Located 5 miles north of downtown San Diego off Interstate 8, Mission Valley is a key player in state history. Part of the 45-mile-long San Diego River valley, which snakes a path from desert-like inland areas to the sparkling Pacific ocean, Mission Valley is home to California's first mission, established in the late-1700s by Spanish Franciscan priest Junipero Serra. Today, the Valley corridor reflects a more modern growth spurt in the mid- and late-1900s, which resulted in its birth as a business and hotel center. In addition to its missions, Mission Valley is the current home of San Diego's professional sports stadium, host to the 2003 Super Bowl. If the air horns and mission bells don't do it for you, ring up some serious victory at Fashion Valley Mall or Mission Valley Center, and take the red Trolley's blue line, which conveniently weaves its way through most of the town's main attractions. Depending on the purpose of your visit, find a hotel or motel in Mission Valley along the neon glut within Hotel Circle, or try nearby Old Town. About a five mile drive away, try hotels in downtown San Diego, Point Loma, Shelter Island or Mission Bay. If you're heading to Qualcomm Stadium, ask prospective hotels how far they are from the blue line of the San Diego Transit Trolley system. It's literally the center of town, where all roads in San Diego lead. Those early residents wouldn't recognize their pastoral farming community now, but San Diego's Mission Valley neighborhood remains synonymous with prosperity, just as it always has been. The Interstate 8 freeway corridor follows the river inland from the coast, through Mission Valley, to the old residential communities of La Mesa and El Cajon, and on into the spectacular wilderness of San Diego's rural East County region. You'll have little trouble finding your way around by car here, but to make things even easier, the San Diego Trolley and Bus system serves Old Town, Qualcomm Stadium and the major shopping centers. Not only is it home to the best shopping centers in San Diego County, it is also a mecca for dining and recreational activities galore. For example, you can play golf, tennis or take nature walks along the San Diego River. California's first mission is here too.
