About Mission Valley
Located within the confines of the city of San Diego, Mission Valley was once a wild area that is now a major shopping and entertainment center for the city of San Diego. It began as the home site of the Kumeyaay Indians before becoming the state's first settlement of Spanish immigrants in 1769. Both the Presidio of San Diego and the Mission of San Diego were originally located at the edge of the valley before being moved to community's current location on the eastern side of the valley. The move was made due to its closer proximity to fresh drinking water. The area was originally called La Canada de San Diego, but was later re-named Mission Valley during the 1860s.
Dairy cows made up the majority of the population of Mission Valley until the 1940s, when the city of San Diego began to outgrow its boundaries and expanded into the area. Dairy farms persisted until the 1960s, when urban sprawl took over and the rural nature of Mission Valley gave way and construction began. Development started with a hotel in 1953, and the first of many regional shopping centers was planned and built starting in 1958. Speed of development increased in the 1950s and 1960s with the construction of U.S. 80, which is now Interstate 8, in the area. A baseball stadium for the San Diego Padres was constructed in 1957, with the team's current home constructed in 1967.
Today, in addition to a huge number of shopping centers, strip malls and store outlets, Mission Valley has some historical sites remaining that are a draw for visitors. The Mission San Diego de Alcala remains standing on the eastern edge of the area, and Presidio Park is to the southwest. Old Town San Diego State Historic Park is also located in Mission Valley. Hotels and motels are located in a centralized area, and apartments are also interspersed throughout the commercial developments to make Mission Valley home to some residents. Qualcomm Stadium, the current name of the home of the Padres, hosts games during baseball season. Mission Valley is also a great place for kids, since a Sea World outlet is located there, as are Mission Bay and numerous other entertaining attractions.
